He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Matthew 16:15
This is a very important question? Who is Jesus Christ? What do you say? Is your answer right?
In the book of Matthew, the narrative continues: 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock[b] I will build my church, and the gates of hell[c] shall not prevail against it…”
Jesus is the Christ? The Son of the Living God? What does this mean? And Jesus’ Father in heaven has revealed this to Peter?
These scriptures are called the first and last proof that Jesus is God eternal (one of the Trinity- Father, Son and Holy Spirit) come in the flesh (as 1 John 4:2&3 says: 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.)
Jesus, when on trial before Pilate, said “62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
Philippians 2:6-8 NIV
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

I think “this Rock” Jesus was referring to was Peter’s affirmation that He is “The Christ, the Son of the Living God.”
