Blind. Why?

For the glory of God.

I have just been reading the Gospel of John. I got to chapter 9, and there is a story of a man who was born blind. Jesus’ followers say, “Why is he like that, teacher? Who sinned, this guy or his parents?”

Typical people, right. If there’s something wrong with you, someone must have done something wrong. They see the blind man as subnormal. Jesus replies, “No one sinned. This man was born this way so God could be glorified.”

Then he made the man better. The man who was blind went to the religious Pharisees. They knew he had been blind, so they asked him his story. “Well I met Jesus,” He said, “And he put mud on my eyes and told me to go and wash in the pool of Siloam. I washed, and now I see.” The Pharisees were upset. It was a Sabbath and people should be resting. They were also very jealous of Jesus. They were the teachers. “Who do you think Jesus is?” They asked him. “He is a prophet.” The man replied. The Pharisees stopped listening to him and called his parents.

“Is this your son who was born blind?” They asked, “How can he see now?” His parents replied, “Yes, this is our son, and we know he was born blind. But we don’t know he can see. Ask him. He’s old enough.” (His parents didn’t want to be put out of the Synagogue for saying Jesus was the Christ, so they said, “Ask him.”)

The religious Pharisees went back to the man who has been blind, and asked him again, “Who healed you?” He said, “Jesus.” They said, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner. And we don’t even know where he came from.” So the man who had been blind, but could now see, thought quickly I must give glory to God. And he said, “Wow, that’s amazing. He healed my eyes, but you don’t know where he came from. We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners. But if anyone does the will of God, God hears him.”

The Pharisees said, “You’re just garbage. And you think you can teach us?” So they put him out of the Synagogue.

John 9 NIV

So here is the account of a man in Jesus’ day who was born with a disability so that God would get the glory. God has a purpose for your life if you’ll live it for him, no matter what your struggles are. He wants to get glory from weaknesses that other people look down on. 🙂

Thankyou Father
